How to Make $1,000,000 a Year In Data Science and Machine Learning — A Fool Proof Method

Now I know what you are thinking, “Jase, a million dollars! Come on!”. Hear me out, if you follow these rules properly then you have as much chance as everyone else. Three easy to follow rules….

Learn Python and all the other paraphernalia.

  • Python — Sadly it doesn’t have much of a map/reduce pattern like functional languages do but another thirty lines of code won’t hurt, no pain no gain! :)
  • How to load CSV files
  • Mean, mode, median, interquartile ranges, meaner, really mean, just plain horrible.
  • How to panic when you run out of memory on machine.
  • Keras, Tensorflow, FastAI or something like that, or all of them. By the end of the tutorials you’ll know every aspect of an Iris that you won’t need machine learning. Someone, somewhere will have done something on YouTube.
  • Train on Cat/Dog pictures. Or Hotdogs if you want….
  • Linear Regression, actually do this in R, far more fun and you’ll learn a new set of swear words.
  • How to plot thing, all the things. Whether they are right or not, it’s snazzy visuals that get the cheques signed (yes, that’s how we write checks over where I live).

Now off to Linkedin and Twitter, create your profiles and wait for the private recruiter messages to roll in. “I see you do data science, Iris and Cat/Dog pictures!”, Yes You Do!

Make Hot Sauce aka Data Science Redux

The year of our lord, 2020 brought a huge influx (and acid reflux) of hot sauce producers across the globe. I bought some too, I wasn’t immune to their sales powers. Over 46% of hot sauce production is made from small indie producers.

With the pandemic we all needed a method to remind our brains that the taste buds were actually connected.

So get the pan on and chuck anything in. Fruit, veg, car parts, aviation fuel or anything else that comes to hand. Grab a domain name, a Shopify account and off you go (plus all other local laws about food production and so on).

My only regret in all of this was not buying shares in Rennies and Gaviscon.

So with the data cleaning and the gut cleaning we come to the last tip.

Buy a Lottery Ticket Every Week aka The Probability Side Hustle

So, the Powerball it is. Five balls and no Powerball required. And there are 52 chances here, so with an outlay of $104 (those Hot Sauce sales will cover it) you are well on your way to that million!

Come on, remember at the start you had as much chance as everyone else. Well you have, 1 in 11,688,053 to be exact.

Improbable but not impossible!

It’s Just Mindset!

If you found value in my advice, or it gave you a laugh, then feel free to send it to someone else. Unless you are already a millionaire.

There are about 1 million more job openings than people looking for work

  • There are 8.6 million people considered out of work in the U.S. and nearly 10 million job openings.
  • Employers are using a number of incentives, including pet insurance and signing bonuses, to fill those positions.
  • “One of the biggest factors is employers are essentially having to buy back job applicants’ Covid lifestyle,” said one HR executive.

Employers in the U.S. face an interesting challenge ahead – how to fill nearly 10 million job openings with about a million fewer workers than there are positions available.

How successful they are will go a long way in determining whether the recent strong of outsized job gains can continue.

The Department of Labor reported Friday that there are some 8.7 million potential workers who have been looking for jobs and are counted among the unemployed. At the same time, job placement site Indeed estimates there are about 9.8 million job vacancies as of July 16, or just a few days after the government’s sample period for the monthly numbers.

Companies have been using a variety of techniques, including signing bonuses, higher salaries and flexible working arrangements, to entice people. That likely will have to continue as the Covid-19 pandemic changes the jobs market, perhaps permanently.

“This is one of the most complex labor markets in recent memory,” said Scott Hamilton, global managing director for the human resources and compensation consulting practice at Gallagher, a global insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting firm. “One of the biggest factors is employers are essentially having to buy back job applicants’ Covid lifestyle.”

‘Really good foundation’ on jobs before delta variant kicks in

A just-released survey from Gallagher shows the extent to which employers are willing to go to entice workers in the pandemic era.

Some 41% of employers responding said they are offering enhanced benefits. One such enticement: 19% say they are offering pet insurance, a perk that is expected to rise to 27% of companies in the next two years.

They’re also providing discount programs, legal services and identity theft protection, though 71% of respondents said medical and pharmacy benefits remain atop the most important added benefits they’re offering.

Job growth has been surging in recent months, with July’s number, reported Friday, showing an addition of 943,000, the biggest spike since August 2020. That came on top of respective gains of 938,000 and 614,000 in the previous two months, for an impressive three-month average of 832,000.

Still, there’s a lot more work to be done, as there are still 6.1 million fewer Americans working now than in February 2020, just before the pandemic hit.

“Labor force participation is flat, so this is just job regrowth,” Hamilton said. “All the big jobs numbers are great, but we’re still growing into lost jobs. So it’s going to get slower as folks are coming back into the market with changed expectations and changed lifestyles.”

Unemployment benefits could be key

One important factor looming ahead is the September expiration of enhanced unemployment benefits.

Indeed reports that in past months, many workers had refrained from taking jobs they didn’t want because they had enough financial cushion to wait. Even with concerns about the virus, the need to get back to work will start to grow.

“Money issues seem to be a rising concern among unemployed workers not searching urgently” Nick Bunker, Indeed’s economic research director, said in a recent report. “More of them said the end of [unemployment insurance] benefits or financial cushions running low were major milestones that could prompt them to take a job.”

9 HELPFUL BUSINESS TIPS FOR NEW FASHION ENTREPRENEURS

You’ve got the passion and the ambition to begin a fashion business. Your idea is firmly planted in your head, and you really, really want to make this business work. You go, entrepreneur! This post is for you. Use these 9 business tips to get your fashion business up and rolling toward success.

1. PLAN, PLAN, PLAN

What’s the first thing every business entrepreneur needs to do? Plan. Plan out your goals, short-term, long-term, and what you want to happen in-between. Keep these specific goals in mind because they will drive you forward. You might have an unstoppable passion for fashion right now, but 7 months down the road, when you feel the teensiest bit of doubt in your mind, you’ll still have your goals to motivate you.

Along with your goals, list any steps that you need to take to make them happen. These steps may include reaching certain financial milestones, establishing relationships with certain suppliers and retailers, and reaching wider audiences.

Planning includes every aspect of your business, from marketing to finances to production. Get your brain wrapped firmly around the concept of your business.

2. KNOW YOUR CLIENTS

Who is going to buy your amazing fashion products?

Pin down your target audience, and then research everything you can about them. What social media do they use? Will you be able to reach them with flyers and brochures? Is email a good marketing choice? How do fashion businesses with similar clients do their marketing? What fashion trends appeal to your clients? What do they enjoy doing in their spare time?

Gather everything you can about your specific demographic, and then tailor your business around them.

3. PLAY UP YOUR BRAND IDENTITY

Once you know your buyers and what they like, you can create a killer brand that will draw your people to you like bees to a flower garden. Think about what is different about your fashions, and use your unique perspective to convey your brand using colors, symbols, images, and words.

The key? Be consistent! You’ll be marketing across different platforms, and you want people to see you more than once and remember that they saw you before.

4. USE YOUR WEBSITE

Your online presence is super important. Make your fashion website a user-friendly feast for the eyes. Use all your creative powers to design a beautiful website full of excellent photos of your product.

This is where you show off. Don’t just take a picture of a dress. Take the best photo you can of a model wearing the dress and looking fabulous. Write lots of delicious details about your product. Your buyer wants to know exactly what they’re getting, or they’re not going to buy it.

Let’s talk pricing, because that’s on your website, too. Research prices as if your business depended on it. Figure out what production costs, find out what similar stores are charging, learn what is the highest price your audience will be willing to pay, and then choose a price somewhere higher than production cost and lower than the highest limit.

5. START SMALL

No matter how many fashions your amazing mind can dream up, you need to begin small and limited. One product line. Start there. Make your single product line the best it can possibly be, and then sell it, sell it, sell it. This strategy keeps your startup costs relatively low, which is good.

You don’t want to have too much to lose right at the beginning. It also allows you to focus and learn the business. No matter how many great business tips you get here, there’s nothing like actually going out there and making it happen.

So make it happen little by little. Work your way up the ladder.

6. SHARE THE BENEFITS AND THE RISKS

It’s extremely helpful to begin your business with a partner or two. Don’t be shy to ask for help. If your fashions are as awesome as you believe they are, someone will see your potential and jump into the venture with you. Chances are, your partners will bring in value.

For example, your partner may have great experience in tracking cash flow. Your partner might be able to bring in a new sector of buyers that you could never have reached on your own. Plus, when you partner up, you’re sharing money and you’re sharing risks. If your business struggles, it’s not all on you.

7. MAINTAIN GOOD PEOPLE SKILLS

Communication. You can create the most fabulous line of handbags in the world, and no one will know if you don’t communicate clearly.

Build relationships with people. All kinds of people. You need customers, You need suppliers. You need people to talk to people about you. In short, you need a community. So get communicating!

Keep your relationships by being courteous, professional, honest, and prompt. Even if an unhappy customer writes a scathing review, be helpful and polite in return. Your business’s reputation is at stake. When people realize how fun and easy it is to shop at your store, you’ll get return customers. Better yet, you’ll get loyalty. That’s what makes maintaining people skills one of the best business tips to implement.

8. GATHER REVIEWS AND CRITIQUES

The best reviews come from people who don’t know you. Sure, you can ask your mom what she thinks, but let’s face it: Mom is biased. Get critiques from professionals and people who are genuinely interested in your brand. Use their advice! Make improvements to your business as you go. That’s the way to move up the ladder and reach your goals.

9. KEEP THE BUSINESS SIDE OF YOUR FASHION VENTURE AT THE FOREFRONT

As an entrepreneur, you need to be a professional business person. Are you going to make rookie mistakes? Sure. Are you going to learn from them? Absolutely. That’s the way it always works.

Balance out your passion for fashion with a practical head for business. Make sure you know what is happening to your money and your product. Allow business data to shape your decisions. Crunching numbers may not be as attractive as knitting cute baby booties, but the two need to work together.

We hope these business tips help you grow your fashion business with confidence!

4 HABITS OF SUCCESSFUL FASHION ENTREPRENEURS

Success within the competitive fashion industry takes talent, passion, and dedication. While important, these essential characteristics are not enough to guarantee success. Most fledgling fashion entrepreneurs also need a certain degree of proficiency in financial planning, marketing, website design, and more. That’s a lot to take on.

Sometimes the day-to-day reality of running a successful fashion business can be overwhelming. When you start to feel like you might be in over your head, it’s easy to fall into patterns that can sideline your productivity. Loss of productivity can interfere with business growth and that sense of personal fulfillment. Here are a few tips to help you develop habits shown to increase productivity, brand longevity, and overall job satisfaction:

SETTING DAILY, WEEKLY, AND MONTHLY GOALS

Whether just getting started or taking your brand to the next level, there will always be days, weeks, or even months at a time when you feel overwhelmed. Rest assured that it’s normal to feel that way when too many tasks demand your attention. But feeling as if you’re always behind can chip away at your self-confidence and stall your progress. While it’s natural to assume you simply need to work harder, the most successful fashion entrepreneurs also know how to work smarter. The key to working smarter is making organizational skills a priority.

It’s much easier to stay organized and focused when you have clearly defined goals and a workable plan. That planning starts by committing monthly goals to writing. After setting a monthly goal, identify the steps you need to achieve each week to be successful. Before beginning a new week, break down the tasks you need to accomplish each day. Consider scheduling your daily workload by the hour. Your day should start with the most important task on your list. The rest of your to-do list should be arranged in descending order of priority.

The key to staying on track is focusing on one task at a time. Contrary to popular belief, multitasking is counterproductive. As you develop goal setting and time management skills, you will likely find that you are achieving more and stressing less.

SCHEDULING PERSONAL TIME

As a passionate, results-oriented designer, you probably invest a lot of time into your business. But if you’ve been devoting every waking hour to brand success, you’ve likely lost sight of the importance of scheduling time for yourself. No one performs well when they’re running on empty. Fashion entrepreneurs who prioritize self-care tend to be healthier, calmer, and more successful than those who don’t.

Protecting your health requires a healthy diet, exercise, and a sufficient amount of rest. While it’s tempting to work while your friends and family sleep, burning the midnight oil too often will eventually catch up with you. Sleep deprivation affects your moods and emotions, cognitive function, hormone production, cardiovascular health, and more. Even minor sleep disruptions can derail your focus, steal your resolve, and stifle your creativity.

While caring for your body, it’s also important to recharge your emotional batteries with activities and experiences you enjoy. Reading for pleasure reduces stress and helps boost emotional intelligence, playing a musical instrument improves cognitive function, coordination, and memory. Making time for physical activity helps your body manage the effects of stress. Long story short, the time you spend taking a break from designing, planning, and marketing will also benefit your business.

COMMUNICATING AS A VALUABLE SOLUTION

Once your brand has launched, it’s important to remember that everyone you do business with makes decisions based on their desire to fulfill a need. Unfortunately, far too many designers lose sight of that fact. Many assume their customers and professional contacts instinctively recognize brand value and understand the benefits of individual design features.

You can avoid brand stagnation by adopting a “what’s in it for them?” approach to every decision you make. Since the people you do business with want to know how your products might improve their lives, spell it out. Ask questions. Start conversations. The more you learn about the needs of your customers through social media contact, blog post comments, and personal interaction, the easier it is to stay relevant and build lasting relationships.

Cultivating your curious nature will help keep your creativity flowing. Offering something of value will build customer loyalty. If your goal is repeat business, provide a rewards program for frequent shoppers. If you’re trying to expand your mailing list, offer a discount or downloadable content in exchange for contact information. A business concept that focuses entirely on brand-image without providing value is unlikely to achieve the results you are hoping for.

KEEP MOVING FORWARD

As you begin to achieve your business goals, it’s far too easy to get complacent. Success generates success. Complacency fuels failure. To keep moving forward, make a habit of staying current with industry trends and new developments. Every week or so, evaluate some of your closest competitors. Make time in your schedule to evaluate websites, read customer comments, and scan social media chatter. The comparison will help you play to your strengths, identify your weaknesses, and keep your brand moving forward.

Part of moving forward also includes recognizing the signs of stalled momentum.  If a large portion of your day is spent registering for trade shows, answering emails, or maintaining your social media presence, your productivity will suffer. When productivity slips or sales sputter, it may be time to hand some of your least favorite tasks to someone else.

You can lighten your load by hiring a personal assistant, social media consultant, website manager, fashion copywriter, or photographer. Easing your workload will free your time for design, production, and other tasks that require a personal touch. If you can’t afford to expand your business through conventional means, consider establishing a virtual business team.

Whether you work solo or as part of a creative team, it’s easy to get discouraged, overwhelmed, or complacent. While staying on top of your game requires clear goals and effective business strategies, all work and no play is not the answer either. Time spent nurturing relationships, protecting your health, and pursuing hobbies will lift your spirits, fuel your creativity, and help you keep up with the demands of success.
